By the next academic school year in the fall of 1971, students were reassigned and bused to various schools in compliance with the Supreme Court decision. This transition resulted in the integration of Charlotte's schools. The process remained mostly peaceful, but threats of violence continued as the school year progressed. Through the late 1990s, busing continued as a means to keep schools integrated.

In comparison with other cities, such as Boston, desegregation in Charlotte worked well. Though never perfect, the city of Charlotte was proud to be known as a city where desegregation worked.
