Charlotte Observer cartoonist Eugene Payne satirized the slow pace of southern school desegregation in this 1967 drawing. In the decade after Gus Roberts graduated from Central High School, only token desegregation existed in Charlotte. Schools remained largely segregated and absent of any meaningful effort to desegregate schools. The Supreme Court, however, came closer to "sparking" change.
