Harry Golden, the editor for the local Carolina Israelite, provided his own commentary on the questions of race, education, and desegregation. A liberal commentator, Golden's insights were often fresh and provoking. In this famous column, he satirizes the controversy and proposes a removal of all desks from the schools. White parents tended to get mad especially when black and white students sat next to each other, so, why not remove all the seats? Thus, his "Vertical Negro Plan" came to be.
