The local NAACP maintained a strong presence throughout the desegregation process in Charlotte. Local leaders continuously put pressure on the school board to desegregate local schools and supported the plaintiffs in the Swann v. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education Supreme Court case. At the same time, the NAACP constantly waged a public relations campaign in the South to defend their true aims and refute claims that they were a communist organization. In reality, they encouraged people to vote and fight racism at the ballot box.
